Most any hard-core athletic enthusiast is aware of the illegal AAS commonly referred to as Winstrol. It is a powerful lean mass, strength and recovery promoter that does not aromatize to estrogens, does not reduce to DHT, and has a decreased potential for HPTA inhibition. This is not to say that use does not decrease natural androgen production…just that the decrease is far less than what is realized from aromatizing drugs like testosterone. Of course, longer protocols result in increased suppression. Some authorities believe Winstrol is a chemical cousin of progestins yet possesses significant anti-progestin effects. (It is improbable that anyone has ever complained about loss of sexual interests from using Winstrol) This is likely the reason many AAS users have reported employing this compound in stacks containing active progestins such as nandrolone or trenbolone as there is significant muscular growth promoting synergy, and a lower potential for loss of libido.

The most common negative side-effect realized from use of this drug is alterations in liver enzymes and lipid profiles resulting in potential negative cholesterol levels and ratios. This is a direct result of the 17-methyl alkylation alteration of the pyrazole structure. Many are not aware that different hormonal compounds have greater or lesser negative affects upon liver enzymes even though they are c-17-methylated. As an example, 40mg daily of the AAS oxandrolone (Anavar) has little negative effects upon the liver. But 40mg daily of the now controlled AAS methyl-1-testosterone will result in concerning hepatic enzyme profiles. This is also true of the many oral birth control hormones. Unfortunately, in this regard, Winstrol falls into the greater negative-effects category.
